My donut!

This was deceivingly harder than it looks, butI finished it. It's sloppier than I wanted it to come out. The wood got splintery when I tried rounding the edges.

Very nice. I'll try to get a picture of mine to share as well.

Robert, great job! It seems like a very basic and simple project, but definitely has it's challenges. Butternut will give you more of a grain challenge than basswood, as it can become more splintery, and it will "speak" to you more when you try and go in the wrong direction. Hope you had fun! Now carve a dozen...

OK Robert, here is my donut.  It is in a piece of basswood that is about 5 inches square.  My main problem was the background When you watch Mary carving the background on something, the channels in the wood look almost machine precise in their dimensions. The same distance apart from each other, and the same distance from the edge of the part. I was all over the place till I realized why I didn't like what I saw. The I re-did the background cuts paying more attention to detail. Definitely pays to have the experience. I see you went a different route and made a smooth background - lowering cut and smoothed it out. That is another thing I haven't done yet is to get a group of cuts to make a really smooth surface. Good job.

Thamk yoy. Nice job Smoky. I didnt like the ridges on mine so I figured I would use it as an exercise as much as I could.
